Numerous are the capitals along the streets of [[Venice]], have been placed, or a prayer or perhaps because, in front of a divine image, were deterred those who had had some bodily need.

So much so that the images of the Madonna and Child are numerous and one can say that there is one on almost every street corner, at least the principal.

At the foot of the [[Ponte della Paglia]], for example, a tabernacle with the Madonna and Child, by Lorenzetti called the '' Madonna of the gondoliers ''.

Under this capital you can read the following inscription:

At the bottom, between two gondolas, reads the laying year MDLXXIII.
