Most likely it was the bed of a river that carried its water to the sea. Make a winding path, as they overturned a, within the city center, dividing it into two main areas, each consisting of three districts, that if you find the right bank are called\u00a0<strong>de citra<\/strong>\u00a0or on the shore left\u00a0<strong>de ultra<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p>On its waters are reflected the most prestigious buildings, for which the Venetians were fighting the best positions, entrusting to the most prestigious architects of the various eras, the task of designing and building the tallest building, the most prestigious, the most beautiful, the most stylistically speaking, modern.<\/p>\r\n<p>Here is that the various\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Scamozzi\">Scamozzi<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Sansovino\">Sansovino<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Longhena\">Longhena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Codussi\">Codussi<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Serlio\">Serlio<\/a>\u00a0have succeeded in planning the construction, giving this magnificent street a wonderful succession of buildings, which in its overall vision can only impress every person who is about to follow it.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/I_Palazzi_in_Canal_Grande\">The Palaces on Grand Canal<\/a>\u00a0are photographed one after the other, with the name of the family that built and occupied.<br \/><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Immagine:Ponte_degli_Scalzi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/images\/thumb\/e\/eb\/Ponte_degli_Scalzi.jpg\/350px-Ponte_degli_Scalzi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\r\n<p>Some of these homes were also warehouses for goods that arrived from all over the known world, so as to become the\u00a0<strong>Grand Canal<\/strong>\u00a0the largest port in the world until the sixteenth century, as even the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Rialto%27s_Bridge\">Rialto&#8217;s Bridge<\/a>\u00a0before its construction in stone, was a wooden drawbridge, as seen from the framework of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Carpaccio\">Carpaccio<\/a>, now the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Gallerie_dell%27Accademia\">Academy Galleries<\/a>, or in the perspective map of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Jacopo_de_Barbari\">Jacopo de Barbari<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Casa_fondaco\">Casa fondaco<\/a>, so it was called this type of dwelling, had the warehouse on the ground floor, mezzanine and offices in the house of the merchant to the main floors.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><br \/>In ancient times, almost all the buildings that face the\u00a0<strong>Grand Canal<\/strong>\u00a0were painted.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Tiziano_Vecellio\">Tiziano Vecellio<\/a>\u00a0was commissioned to paint the exterior wall to the street of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Fondaco_dei_Tedeschi\">German Warehouse<\/a>. It was located at the beginning of\u00a0<strong>Grand Canal<\/strong>, in what today is called the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Punta_della_Dogana\">Punta della Dogana<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><br \/>The night this wonderful gateway to the city was closed by a thick chain that crossed the Channel and was blocking actually browsing inside the city.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the\u00a0<strong>Grand Canal<\/strong>\u00a0flow into the main streams of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Venice\">Venice<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Canale_di_Cannaregio\">Cannaregio Canal<\/a>, which is reached with large boats from the mainland, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Rio_di_Noale\">Rio di Noale<\/a>\u00a0leading directly towards the north lagoon, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Rio_del_Fondaco_dei_Tedeschi\">Rio&#8217;s German Warehouse<\/a>\u00a0which allows us to move swiftly towards\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Castello\">Castello<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Arsenale\">Arsenal<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Rio_di_San_Luca\">Rio di San Luca<\/a>\u00a0which flows directly in front the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Chiesa_della_Salute\">Church of Health<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/index.php?title=Rio_San_Polo&amp;action=edit\">Rio San Polo<\/a>\u00a0road which crosses the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Sestieri\">Sestieri<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/San_Polo\">San Polo<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Santa_Croce\">Santa Croce<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/index.php?title=Rio_di_Ca%27_Foscari&amp;action=edit\">Rio di Ca&#8217; Foscari<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Rio_di_San_Trovaso\">Rio di San Trovaso<\/a>\u00a0that lead into the inner parts of the District of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Dorsoduro\">Dorsoduro<\/a>.<br \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Grand Canal<\/strong>\u00a0is crossed by four bridges. In chronological order, the first to be built was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Rialto%27s_Bridge\">Rialto&#8217;s Bridge<\/a>\u00a0which is known since 1264, only to be built in stone in 1592 as we see it today. Then it was built in 1864\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Ponte_dell%27Accademia\">Accademia Bridge<\/a>, first as iron footbridge and then wooden stands today. Only in 1931 they built the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Ponte_degli_Scalzi\">Scalzi Bridge<\/a>\u00a0before the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venicewiki.org\/wiki\/Stazione_Ferroviaria_Santa_Lucia\">Railway Station Saint Lucia<\/a>\u00a0which replaced in case of this iron footbridge.
