Building in the Grand Canal
Da Venicewiki, il wiki di Venezia
The main waterway running through Venice is Grand Canal. Most likely it was the bed of a river that carried its water to the sea. Make a winding path, as they overturned a, within the city center, dividing it into two main areas, each consisting of three Sestieri, so they are called the districts of Venice, ones that are on right bank are called de citra, those on the left bank de ultra.
On its waters are reflected the most prestigious buildings, for which the Venetians were fighting the best positions, entrusting the most prestigious architects of the various periods, the task to design and build the tallest building, the most prestigious, the most beautiful, as, stylistically speaking, modern for various periods in which they were built.
In 1495 the French ambassador 'Philip de Commynes' arrived in Venice along the Grand Canal in Venetian Gondola, wrote in his report:
It's the best way that I think the world exists, flanked by the most beautiful buildings, and goes throughout the city.
The buildings are big and tall, in good stone, all those ancient paintings; others, built in the last century, have the facade of white marble that comes from Istria, that is one hundred miles; and also some block of porphyry and serpentine on the facades. ...
Here is that the various Scamozzi, Sansovino, Longhena, Codussi, Serlio have followed in planning the construction, giving this magnificent via a stunning succession of buildings, which, in its overall vision, can only impress every person who is about to follow it.
Here are inserted all the palaces that are reflected on the waters of the Grand Canal, one directly in front of the other, starting from Punta della Dogana and going to the Ponte dell'Accademia, to Rialto's Bridge up until the end of Ponte della Costituzione.
